Randy McDonald—Founder, Managing Director and President of Magnum. Mr. McDonald has over 25 years of ophthalmic experience in sales, marketing, business development, operations and financing with both Fortune 500 and start-up organizations. Mr. McDonald has specific product knowledge and senior level industry contacts in refractive surgery, ophthalmic, contact and intraocular lenses, as well as capital/diagnostic equipment and e-commerce services. Prior to Magnum, Mr. McDonald served as Executive Vice President of DAC Vision, the largest US manufacturer of consumable products and supplies for ophthalmic lens fabrication. He was the first Chief Operating Officer of Innotech, Inc., an ophthalmic lens manufacturer, which was sold to Johnson & Johnson and is currently owned by Essilor, and has held various sales and marketing positions with Bausch & Lomb, Dow Corning, Quantum Labs and Hydrocurve (now part of CIBA Vision).

Mr. McDonald is a co-founder of six start ups, including, Innotech (see above), Quest Vision Technologies, Inc., (an Accommodating Intraocular Lens “IOL” company, which was sold to AMO in 2005); PowerVision, Inc. (a micro-fluidics adjustable Accommodating IOL company, that was VC funded in 2004 & 2007); and Vision Solutions Technologies, Inc. (a Macular Degeneration IOL Company) that is currently conducting proof of concept studies. Mr. McDonald holds a B.S. in Political Science and History from Kansas State University, has written numerous published articles and spoken at a variety of ophthalmic meetings.

Bob Schulz—Executive Vice President. Mr. Schulz has over 15-years of experience in the ophthalmic industry, both as a consultant and as a corporate executive. Mr. Schulz has been affiliated with The Magnum Group since 2000. His prior consulting experience includes business development, merger & acquisition, strategic & business planning studies, capital-raising and valuation projects for clients ranging from start-ups to publicly-held companies in the ophthalmic, medical device, medical service and biotechnology sectors. Mr. Schulz previously was a co-founder and President/CEO of Quest Vision Technology, Inc., an accommodating IOL company that was sold to AMO in 2005, founder and president of a start-up medical services company and was an executive officer of Santen Holdings US, Inc. responsible for Santen’s (Tokyo Stock Exchange) corporate planning and business development activities outside of Japan.

Mr. Schulz previously held positions as President of Anacapa Advisors, AgriTrust, California Beach Restaurants (NASDAQ), Cushman Equities Corporation and Zaca Mesa Winery. From 1978-84, he served as a First Vice President in the investment banking department of Bateman Eichler, Hill Richards Inc. (now Everen Securities) and from 1975-78, he served as the Manager of KPMG Peat Marwick’s Acquisition Advisory Services practice on the West Coast and formerly in its Management Consulting Department. Mr. Schulz holds a BA in Economics from the University of California Santa Barbara and an MBA in Finance from the University of Southern California.

James M. Grootegoed—Vice President, Optical Markets. Mr. Grootegoed provides market research and analysis on new product and technologies for Magnum’s Optical Technologies Division. Mr. Grootegoed is a 30-year industry veteran in wholesale lab, sales, marketing, administration and corporate management. He retired in 2001 and is a consultant to The Magnum Group, Inc. as well as other ophthalmic companies. From 1982 until December 2001, Mr. Grootegoed served in a variety of positions with Walman Optical Company, most recently as Executive Vice President, and Board Member. Walman is the second largest wholesale laboratory in the USA with 21 branches in 19 states. During his tenure, annual sales grew from $56 million to $138 million. Prior to Walman, Mr. Grootegoed worked for Bausch & Lomb from 1979 to 1982 in product management and then as Director of Marketing for the Optical Laboratory Division. Mr. Grootegoed entered the ophthalmic industry in 1974 as a sales representative with Titmus Optical and was promoted to Manager of Distribution, Customer Service and Product Manager.

Mr. Grootegoed is a founder and former board member of the Polycarbonate Council and the AR (Anti Reflective) Council. He is currently the Technology Editor for a publication that focuses on lens processing, and has written many articles and spoken at numerous industry meetings and conferences. Mr. Grootegoed is a graduate of California State University, Los Angeles, CA.

Julie Ritchey—Marketing Services Manager and Executive Assistant to Mr. McDonald. Ms. Ritchey is responsible for Magnum’s Customer Service, Client Scheduling, Web Site Management and Trade Show and Medical Conference Support. Ms. Ritchey has a Bachelors Degree in Marketing from the College of Business at San Jose State University.

Joan Coda—Accounting Manager. Ms. Coda is responsible for managing Magnum’s accounting services department. She has over 35 years experience in accounting and management, and previously served as Registrar for the University of San Francisco School of Law as well as Manager of the Equity Line Department for Westamerica Bank. Ms. Coda attended Dominican University majoring in Humanities.
